The people of WCC

Founder & Members

From the club formed in 1974 to the Veterans fellowship renewed in 2012 — the people and memories that keep the WCC story alive.

Founder & President

M. R. Venkiteswaran (Kannan)

Kannan has been part of the cricketing life of Wadakkanchery since around 1970. His association reaches back to the years before Wadakkanchery Cricket Club was formed in 1974 and has continued across more than five decades of cricket, friendship and fellowship.

During that long journey, Kannan’s contribution extended far beyond simply taking the field. An opening batter and pace bowler in his playing years, he also contributed through captaincy, team coordination, match organisation, association activities, support for the ground and events, and the encouragement of younger players. Over time, these roles made him an enduring link across successive phases of the WCC story.

One of Kannan’s own treasured cricketing memories comes from a B Division league match at Kerala Varma College in 1978–79. He was dismissed for 99, missing a century by just one run. It is the kind of score that remains in a cricketer’s memory forever. Yet the deeper measure of his contribution to WCC lies not merely in runs scored or matches played, but also in the people he encouraged, the teams he helped bring together and the friendships that grew around the Wadakkanchery ground.

Memories shared by fellow players reveal that personal side particularly well. One member remembers Kannan visiting his home before an early league match, encouraging him to join the WCC team and obtaining permission from his family for the journey to Thrissur. Later that day, Kannan noticed that the young player had no money for refreshments and quietly made sure he was included. Such a moment may never find a place in a scorebook, but it says much about the spirit in which relationships were built within WCC.

Years moved on, playing careers changed and many members travelled in different directions, but the friendships created through cricket endured. When members of that generation came together again through the Veterans fellowship in 2012, it was not the beginning of an entirely new story; it was the natural continuation of relationships formed decades earlier. Kannan recalls captaining WCC Veterans in its inaugural year and has continued to extend his support to the group. His journey therefore provides an important bridge between WCC’s playing years and the fellowship preserved by its Veterans today.
